Re-Kånken backpack Fjällräven take Sustainable Design one step further

Superb quality to make it long lasting and sustainable is no longer enough… The new Re-Kånken has been launched, made from one single yarn of recycled plastic bottles. Spin dyed to use less water, energy and chemicals. Ready to be used, travelled and loved. And in the distant future recycled again.

‘Because without nature we’re nothing’ is a humble quote from the designers of the Swedish outdoor wear specialist, Fjällräven, who have just taken sustainable design a step further. They are known for their classic backpacks made from a hardwearing material, in a retro design so many have come to love. It has been used for decades and has won the hearts of people all over the world without changing its timeless design. And now a new version of Kånken is being released with only one change: the fabrics used in Re-Kånken are 95% made from recycled materials, and are recyclable themselves.

The Re-Kånken is a special edition of Kånken, made entirely from polyester recycled from plastic bottles. Dyed with SpinDye technology that radically reduces the amount of water, energy and chemicals used. An everyday companion with the same genius design as the original, but now reinvented from a recycling/recyclable perspective that saves natural resources. In the far, far, future it can be recycled again.

The main compartment has a large zippered opening that makes it easy to pack and unpack. It comes with a seat pad that is stored in the inside back packet where it stops the contents of the backpack pressing against the back. The seat pad is also handy for when a pause is needed. There are also two flat side pockets and a zippered pocket on the front, perfect for small items you want to keep close at hand.

The carrying system is simple but functional with handles at the top and flexible, adjustable shoulder straps. Embroidered logo. Address tag inside the main compartment.

The Re-Kånken is also available in Mini – so your little one can go on adventures in eco-friendly style too!

Meanwhile, I have my eyes on the Kånken No 2 Backpack with leather handles, in a monochrome black. It’s great for everyday use in the city (or for senior school) but also, with the insert, it becomes the perfect camera bag.

In a few days we’ll be on our way to Norway. And the Flällräven flagship store is high up on my list. I’d like to take a closer look both for myself and our girls, who are getting ready to go back to school.
